ARTIS

ARTIS is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, founded in 1838, and combines a zoo, aquarium, planetarium, and botanical garden in one lush 14-hectare park in central Amsterdam. Visitors can see elephants, giraffes, lions, and many other animals in enclosures that blend historic architecture with modern habitats. The aquarium features a coral reef and a tropical rainforest hall with free-flying birds. The planetarium offers immersive shows about the night sky. ARTIS is distinctive for its 19th-century layout, with winding paths past monumental buildings like the Aquarium Building (1882) and the Groote Museum. Know before you go

• Arrive early to see animal feeding times, which are posted at the entrance.
• Many exhibits are outdoors, so bring rain gear if weather is uncertain. The aquarium and planetarium are indoor.
• Several cafés and restaurants are on-site, including a brasserie and a pancake house. Picnics are allowed in designated areas.

A bit of history

ARTIS opened in 1838 as 'Natura Artis Magistra' (Nature is the Teacher of Art). It was one of the first zoos in Europe to focus on scientific study and public education, and its historic buildings are protected monuments.
