The Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, or Tower of Our Lady, dominates the Amersfoort skyline as the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. This Gothic structure, part of a former church destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in 1651, stands alone in a square. Visitors can climb the 346 steps to the top for sweeping views over the city and surrounding countryside. Inside, the tower houses a carillon with 47 bells, and you may hear them chime on the hour. The climb is rewarded with a close-up look at the tower's intricate stonework and the bell mechanism. The site is a must for history buffs and anyone seeking a unique perspective of Amersfoort.
