The Waag is one of Alkmaar's most iconic buildings, a former weigh house where cheese was traditionally traded. Today, it houses the Alkmaar Cheese Museum, which details the history of Dutch cheese-making and the famous Alkmaar cheese market. The building itself is a fine example of Renaissance architecture with a striking facade. Visitors can explore the museum's exhibits, including a replica cheese warehouse and interactive displays. On Friday mornings from April to September, the square in front comes alive with the traditional cheese market, where porters carry cheese on sleds. The Waag also offers a café with outdoor seating, perfect for watching the bustle.

Don't miss
