Shark Island concentration camp was one of the first concentration camps in history, established by German colonial forces during the Herero and Nama genocide (1904–1908). Thousands of Herero and Nama people were imprisoned here under brutal conditions, and many died. Today, the site is marked by a memorial and interpretive plaques. Visitors can reflect on this painful history while standing on the same ground where atrocities occurred, with the Atlantic Ocean as a somber backdrop.

Don't miss

  • Visit the memorial and read the interpretive plaques detailing the camp's history.
  • Walk the grounds to understand the harsh conditions faced by prisoners.
  • Reflect at the mass grave site commemorating those who died.
