Kyaikthanlan Pagoda crowns a hill in central Mawlamyine, offering panoramic vistas of the city, the Salween River, and the distant Gulf of Mottama. This Buddhist stupa, believed to date back over 2,000 years, is said to have been visited by Rudyard Kipling, who mentioned it in his writings. Visitors climb a covered stairway lined with shops and stalls, passing shrines and smaller pagodas before reaching the gleaming golden spire. The site is especially atmospheric at sunset when the light softens over the riverscape.
