The Mahamuni Buddha Temple is a major pilgrimage site in Mandalay, home to the Mahamuni Buddha image, a 4-meter-tall bronze statue that is believed to be one of only five likenesses of the Buddha made during his lifetime. The image is covered in layers of gold leaf applied by devotees, giving it a distinctive, rounded form. The temple complex is bustling with worshippers, especially in the early morning when the face of the Buddha is ritually washed. Visitors can observe the gold-leaf application, explore the surrounding halls filled with ancient artifacts, and see the six bronze Khmer-style statues at the entrance.

Don't miss

  • Witness the daily face-washing ceremony of the Mahamuni Buddha at 4:30 AM
  • Observe devotees applying gold leaf to the Buddha image, a continuous tradition for centuries
  • View the six bronze Khmer statues at the temple entrance, known as the 'Lords of the Iron Age'
