Shwezigon Pagoda is a massive golden stupa built in the 11th century by King Anawrahta, the founder of the Pagan Kingdom. It is one of the most revered and iconic pagodas in Bagan, believed to enshrine relics of the Buddha. The pagoda's bell-shaped stupa rises from a series of terraces, covered in gold leaf that glitters in the sun. Visitors can walk around the base, past smaller shrines and statues, and observe local devotees offering prayers. The pagoda is a pilgrimage site, and its serene atmosphere contrasts with the bustling temple plains.
