Mingalazedi Pagoda, meaning 'Blessing Stupa,' is one of Bagan's largest and most impressive monuments. Built in the late 13th century, it features a massive bell-shaped stupa atop three receding terraces. The pagoda is renowned for its hundreds of glazed terracotta plaques, each depicting a scene from the Jataka tales, stories of the Buddha's previous incarnations. Visitors can walk around the terraces to examine these intricate tiles, which retain much of their original green, yellow, and brown glazes, offering a vivid glimpse into Buddhist storytelling and medieval craftsmanship.

Don't miss

  • Study the hundreds of glazed terracotta plaques on the terraces, each illustrating a different Jataka tale.
  • Climb the terraces for panoramic views of the surrounding Bagan plains and other pagodas.
  • Notice the original green, yellow, and brown glazes that have survived centuries of weathering.
