The Iles Purpuraires, also known as the Purple Islands, are a small archipelago off Essaouira's coast, named for the ancient purple dye industry that thrived here. These rocky islands are now a haven for seabirds, including gannets and cormorants, and are part of a protected area. Visitors can take boat excursions to view the islands up close, learning about their role in Phoenician and Roman times when the prized Tyrian purple dye was extracted from Murex sea snails. The islands offer a serene escape into nature and history, with clear waters and dramatic rock formations.
