The Fortifications of Kotor are an extensive system of defensive walls, towers, and gates that encircle the Old Town and climb the mountain behind it. Built primarily during the Venetian period, these fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved examples of medieval military architecture in the Adriatic. Visitors can hike up the walls to the Castle of San Giovanni for breathtaking views of the Bay of Kotor. The experience combines history with physical activity, as the climb involves over 1,300 steps. Along the way, you'll see old bastions, chapels, and remnants of the city's defensive past.
