The Fortifications of Kotor form an impressive defensive system stretching over 4 kilometers up the mountain of St. John. Built from the 9th to 19th centuries, they include walls, towers, and the fortress of St. John at the top. The climb of about 1,350 steps offers breathtaking views of the Bay of Kotor and the old town. Along the way, visitors pass the Church of Our Lady of Remedy and see remnants of medieval gates. The fortifications are a testament to Kotor's strategic importance, protecting it from invaders by land and sea.

Don't miss

  • Climb to the Fortress of St. John for panoramic views of the bay and mountains.
  • Stop at the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, a small chapel halfway up.
  • Examine the well-preserved walls and gates, including the Sea Gate and the Gurdic Gate.
