San Juan Chamula is the heart of a Tzotzil Maya community where traditional religion fuses with Catholicism. Visitors enter the church to find a pine-needle-covered floor, rows of candles, and families performing rituals with prayers, incense, and sometimes live chickens. The atmosphere is deeply spiritual and unlike any other church in Mexico. Photography inside is strictly forbidden, adding to the sacred mystery. Outside, the market sells local crafts and the famous posh (fermented sugarcane drink).
