The Temple of the Inscriptions is one of the most significant Maya structures in Palenque. This nine-tiered pyramid rises above the jungle, its summit crowned by a temple with five doorways. Inside, a hidden stairway leads down to the burial chamber of K'inich Janaab' Pakal, whose intricately carved sarcophagus lid depicts his descent into the underworld. The temple's name comes from the three large stone panels covered in Maya glyphs that narrate Pakal's lineage and accomplishments. Visitors can climb the steep steps for panoramic views and inspect the detailed reliefs that still bear traces of original red paint.
