The Árbol del Tule is a colossal Montezuma cypress (Taxodium mucronatum) located in the town of Santa María del Tule, just outside Oaxaca City. With a trunk circumference of over 42 meters (138 feet), it is widely considered the stoutest tree in the world by trunk diameter. The tree is over 2,000 years old and stands in the churchyard of the town's main church. Visitors can walk around the tree, view its massive branches, and see the carved figures that locals have pointed out in its bark. The site includes a small market and garden area.
Don't miss
- Stand beside the enormous trunk and appreciate its massive girth.
- Look for the animal shapes (like a lion, elephant, and alligator) in the tree's bark.
- Visit the adjacent church of Santa María del Tule and its small museum.
