Akumal is a small coastal community centered around a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay. Its name means 'place of the turtles' in Maya, and it lives up to that reputation: green sea turtles frequently graze on seagrass in the shallow waters, making snorkeling here a highlight. The beach is lined with palm trees and low-key resorts, offering a more relaxed alternative to crowded Cancun. Visitors can swim with turtles in designated areas, explore nearby cenotes, or simply soak up the sun on the soft sand.
Don't miss
- Snorkel with wild green sea turtles in the protected bay, a rare and respectful wildlife encounter.
- Walk the length of the beach to find quieter spots away from the main hotel clusters.
- Visit the nearby Yal-Ku lagoon, a calm inlet perfect for snorkeling among mangroves and fish.
