Chinguetti is a historic ksar (fortified village) in Mauritania, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Once a major caravan center linking North Africa to sub-Saharan trade routes, it is now renowned for its five ancient libraries containing centuries-old Islamic manuscripts. Visitors can wander narrow alleyways lined with sandstone houses, explore the libraries (some open to the public), and see the iconic mosque. The town's atmosphere evokes a bygone era of Saharan scholarship and commerce.
