The Rotunda of Mosta, officially the Church of St. Mary, dominates the town of Mosta with its colossal neoclassical dome, spanning 37 meters and ranking among the largest unsupported domes globally. Completed in 1860, its design was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. Visitors marvel at the vast, light-filled interior and the famous replica of a WWII bomb that pierced the dome during a 1942 air raid but miraculously did not detonate, sparing the 300 people inside. The church remains an active place of worship, and its serene atmosphere invites quiet contemplation of both architectural grandeur and local history.
Don't miss
- Stand beneath the massive unsupported dome and admire its engineering and scale.
- See the replica bomb that fell through the dome during WWII without exploding.
- View the ornate interior, including the marble altar and intricate paintings.
