St. Paul's Catacombs in Qawra are an extensive complex of subterranean burial chambers dating from the Roman period, around the 4th century AD. The site features dozens of interconnected tombs, including family chambers, agape tables for funeral feasts, and intricate carvings. Visitors can descend into the cool, dimly lit tunnels and see loculi (niches) where bodies were placed, as well as painted frescoes. The catacombs offer a fascinating insight into early Christian and pagan burial practices on the island.

Don't miss

  • The 'agape table' carved from rock, used for commemorative meals
  • Well-preserved loculi and arcosolium tombs with decorative motifs
  • The small on-site museum displaying pottery and inscriptions found in the catacombs
