St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta is a dazzling jewel of Baroque art and architecture. Consecrated in 1578 as the conventual church of the Knights of St. John, its austere exterior belies a riot of gilded ornament, marble inlays, and painted vaults. The main attraction is Caravaggio's monumental painting 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist', his largest work and the only one he signed. Visitors are equally awed by the intricate marble tombstones covering the floor, marking the burial places of knights. The oratory and museum enrich the experience with tapestries and relics.

Don't miss

  • View Caravaggio's 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist' in the oratory
  • Admire the richly decorated vaulted ceiling painted by Mattia Preti
  • Study the intricate marble tombstones of the Knights of St. John
