The Tyre Hippodrome, located within the Al Bass archaeological complex, is a massive Roman chariot racing arena dating back to the 2nd century AD. It could seat up to 20,000 spectators and is remarkably well-preserved, with the starting gates (carceres) and central spina still visible. Visitors can walk along the track and imagine the roar of the crowd during ancient races. Its size and condition make it a standout feature of Tyre's Roman heritage.

Don't miss

  • Stand at the starting gates and see the original stone carceres where chariots began.
  • Walk the length of the track to appreciate the scale of the arena.
  • Look for the remains of the spina, the central barrier with turning posts.
