Grobiņa, just east of Liepāja, is one of Latvia's oldest settlements, with a history stretching back to the Viking Age. The main attractions are the Grobiņa hillfort, an ancient fortified settlement overlooking the Ālande River, and the nearby ruins of a medieval castle built by the Livonian Order in the 13th century. Visitors can climb the hillfort for panoramic views, explore the castle's remaining walls and towers, and learn about the area's role in trade and conflict.
