The Mombasa tusks are a pair of monumental arches on Moi Avenue, designed to resemble elephant tusks. Erected in 1952 to commemorate the visit of Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II), they have become the city's most recognizable landmark. The tusks are made of aluminum and painted white, standing at the entrance to the city center. They symbolize Mombasa's status as a gateway to Kenya's wildlife and a welcoming destination. Visitors often stop to photograph the arches, especially when illuminated at night, and they serve as a popular meeting point.

Don't miss

  • Capture a photo of the tusks at sunset when they are lit up against the darkening sky.
  • Walk through the arches to feel the symbolic welcome to Mombasa's vibrant city center.
