The Vasco da Gama Pillar, standing on a coral outcrop near Malindi's seafront, is a cross-shaped stone monument erected by the Portuguese explorer in 1498 to commemorate his friendly reception by the Sultan of Malindi. It is one of the oldest European monuments in East Africa, featuring a distinctive cross carved into the coral rock. Visitors can view the pillar from a nearby public beach or approach it at low tide; the site offers panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and is a popular photo spot. The pillar's weathered surface tells a story of centuries of coastal history.
