Shoubak Castle, also known as Montreal, is a Crusader stronghold built in 1115 by Baldwin I of Jerusalem. Perched on a conical hill, it offers commanding views of the surrounding desert and valleys. Visitors can explore its massive stone walls, vaulted halls, and underground passages, including a remarkable staircase carved into the rock leading to a secret water source. The castle's remote location and partly ruined state give it a rugged, atmospheric feel, distinct from more restored sites like Kerak. It's a must for history buffs and those seeking off-the-beaten-path ruins.

Don't miss

  • Climb the castle ramparts for panoramic desert and valley views.
  • Descend the rock-cut staircase to the ancient underground water cistern.
