Shureimon is a striking Chinese-style gate located at the main entrance to Shuri Castle, featuring a distinctive red-and-white color scheme and a curved roof with intricate carvings. The gate's name means 'Palace of Propriety,' and it once served as a ceremonial entry for Ryukyuan kings and Chinese envoys. Today, it is one of Okinawa's most photographed landmarks, symbolizing the island's unique cultural blend. Visitors often pause here to admire the architecture and the view of the castle grounds beyond, making it a perfect starting point for exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Don't miss

  • Photograph the gate's ornate roof with dragon and phoenix motifs, reflecting Ryukyu's ties to China.
  • Walk through the gate and up the stone path, following the route once taken by royal processions.
  • Read the plaque with the gate's name in Chinese characters, a gift from a Chinese emperor.
