Fushimi Inari-taisha is Kyoto's most iconic Shinto shrine, dedicated to Inari, the god of rice and prosperity. Visitors walk through thousands of vibrant vermilion torii gates that line a network of trails ascending Mount Inari. The experience is immersive, with the gates casting dappled light and shadows. Along the way, you'll find smaller sub-shrines, stone fox statues (Inari's messengers), and peaceful forest views. The hike to the summit takes about two hours, but even a short stroll offers the distinctive gate-lined paths.
Don't miss
- Walk through the Senbon Torii (thousands of gates) main path, where gates are densely packed.
- Spot the many fox statues, often with a key in their mouth, representing Inari's messengers.
- Visit the Yotsutsuji intersection for a panoramic view of Kyoto halfway up the mountain.
