Harutoridaichi Pit Dwellings are archaeological remains from the Jomon period, Japan's prehistoric era known for its hunter-gatherer culture. Located in Kushiro, this site preserves several semi-subterranean pit houses that were once homes. Visitors can see the depressions in the ground marking where structures stood, along with reconstructed models that illustrate how they might have looked. The site offers a fascinating window into daily life thousands of years ago, including how people adapted to Hokkaido's cold climate. Interpretive displays provide context on Jomon pottery, tools, and subsistence strategies.
