Niutsuhime Shrine is an ancient Shinto shrine located at the foot of Mount Kōya, marking the entrance to the sacred mountain. It is a key stop on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes, which connect several holy sites in the Kii Peninsula. The shrine is dedicated to the deity Niutsuhime, who is associated with water and purification. Visitors can see its traditional architecture, including a thatched main hall and vermilion-lacquered gates, set in a tranquil forest. The site exemplifies the historical fusion of Shinto and Buddhism (shinbutsu-shūgō) that characterized Japanese spirituality for centuries.
