Kudoyama Station is a charming, retro-style station on the Nankai Kōya Line, located at the base of the mountain and steeped in pilgrimage history. For centuries, this area was the starting point for the arduous trek to Kōyasan, and the station retains a nostalgic atmosphere with its wooden benches and old-fashioned ticket booth. Today, it serves as a convenient stop for hikers on the Kumano Kodo, with clear signposts pointing to the trailhead. The station building also houses a small visitor information center where you can pick up maps and stamps for the pilgrimage passport. Nearby, the Jison-in Temple offers lodging and a glimpse into the lives of ancient pilgrims.
Don't miss
- Collect a stamp at the station for the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage passport
- Visit Jison-in Temple, a historic temple lodging just a short walk away
- Walk the first section of the Kumano Kodo trail from the station to the mountain
