Kitano-chō is a charming hillside district in Kobe that preserves the legacy of the city's international port history. In the late 1800s, foreign merchants built elegant Western-style residences, known as Ijinkan, which now stand as museums and cultural sites. Visitors can tour several of these houses, each with unique architecture and period furnishings, such as the former U.S. Consulate or the French-style house. The area's cobblestone streets and European ambiance offer a peaceful escape from the modern city, with cafes and shops nestled among the historic buildings.

Don't miss

  • Tour the former U.S. Consulate (Kitano Ijinkan) to see restored rooms with 19th-century decor.
  • Visit the Weathercock House, a distinctive Dutch-style building with a rooster weather vane.
  • Stroll the sloping streets lined with preserved mansions and enjoy a coffee at a historic café.
