Mount Asama is an active stratovolcano rising 2,568 meters above the Karuizawa plateau. Its rugged, ash-covered slopes and smoking summit create a dramatic landscape. Hikers can tackle the main trail from the Asama Sanso trailhead, passing volcanic rock fields and alpine flora before reaching the crater rim for panoramic views of the Japanese Alps and the Kanto Plain. Due to volcanic activity, access to the summit is sometimes restricted, but the lower trails offer equally impressive scenery. The mountain's raw power and stark beauty make it a must-see for adventurous visitors.
