Kutsukake-shuku is one of the 69 post stations along the Nakasendo, the ancient highway connecting Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). This charming neighborhood retains its Edo-period character with rows of wooden machiya houses, some now converted into shops, cafes, and inns. Visitors can walk the original stone-paved path, imagining the foot traffic of samurai and merchants centuries ago. The town is less crowded than other post towns like Tsumago, offering a quieter glimpse into Japan's travel history. It's an ideal stop for a leisurely stroll and a taste of old Japan.

Don't miss

  • Walk the preserved Nakasendo trail section through town, lined with classic wooden buildings and stone paths.
  • Visit the Kutsukake-shuku Honjin, the former inn for high-ranking samurai, now a small museum.
  • Browse local crafts and try traditional snacks at the small shops along the main street.
