Himeji Castle, also called White Heron Castle for its elegant white plaster walls, is the finest surviving example of early 17th-century Japanese castle architecture. Visitors explore a maze-like interior with steep wooden stairs, hidden rooms, and weapon storage areas, all designed to confuse attackers. The castle's six floors offer panoramic views of Himeji city. Unlike many Japanese castles, Himeji's main keep is original, never rebuilt, making it a rare authentic experience.
Don't miss
- Climb to the top floor of the main keep for sweeping views of the surrounding city and mountains.
- Explore the winding paths and multiple gates of the castle's defensive layout, designed to slow invaders.
- See the original wooden pillars and stone-drop windows that reveal the castle's medieval construction techniques.
