Kenchō-ji, established in 1253, is the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan and a cornerstone of Kamakura's Zen heritage. The temple complex is vast, featuring a majestic two-story Sanmon gate that greets visitors, leading to a large Buddha hall (Butsuden) housing a wooden statue of Jizo. The serene grounds include a traditional Zen garden with a pond and stone arrangements, and the temple still functions as an active monastery, with monks in training visible during morning rituals.
