The Hells of Beppu are a set of seven spectacular hot spring ponds, each distinguished by its own color and character, from the blood-red Chinoike Jigoku to the cobalt-blue Umi Jigoku. Visitors walk between these steaming pools, observing bubbling mud, hissing steam vents, and mineral-rich waters that create surreal landscapes. Unlike bathing onsens, these are strictly for viewing, offering a safe way to appreciate the raw power of Beppu's volcanic activity. The ponds are spread across two main areas, with each hell presenting a unique natural phenomenon, making it a must-see for anyone interested in geothermal wonders.

Don't miss

  • Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) with its striking red water
  • Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) featuring a vivid cobalt-blue pond and a small tropical garden
  • Oniishibozu Jigoku (Shaven Monk's Head Hell) with bubbling gray mud pools
