Asuka-dera, also known as Hōkō-ji, is a historic Buddhist temple established in 588 by Soga no Umako, making it one of Japan's earliest temples. The main hall enshrines the Asuka Daibutsu, a bronze Buddha cast in 609, which is the oldest known Buddhist statue in Japan. Visitors can see this serene image up close, along with remnants of the original temple layout. The tranquil grounds, with ancient stone foundations and a peaceful garden, offer a palpable sense of history and the dawn of Buddhism in Japan.
