Isasumi Shrine is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in the Tohoku region, founded in the Nara period. Nestled in a grove of towering cedar trees, the shrine features a vermilion-lacquered main hall (honden) and a thatched-roof worship hall. Visitors can purify at the stone water basin, ring the bell, and offer prayers. The shrine is also famous for its annual festival, Isasumi Matsuri, featuring portable shrines and traditional dances. The peaceful grounds invite quiet contemplation away from the city.
Don't miss
- Admire the elegant honden built in the nagare-zukuri style with a distinctive curved roof.
- Participate in the traditional purification ritual at the chozuya (water pavilion).
- Attend the Isasumi Matsuri in July to see mikoshi processions and kagura performances.
