The Gallerie dell'Accademia is a museum of pre-19th-century Venetian art on the south bank of the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro district. It is housed in a complex that includes the former Scuola Grande, church, and convent of Santa Maria della Carità. A bit of history
The Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia was founded in 1750, and the gallery opened to the public on 10 August 1817. It became independent from the art academy in 1879. The building complex was assembled by the Napoleonic administration from disbanded religious institutions, including the Scuola della Carità (dating to 1343) and a Palladian convent started in 1561.
