Arco della Pace

The Arco della Pace (Arch of Peace) is a majestic neoclassical triumphal arch located at the northern entrance of Parco Sempione in Milan. Built between 1807 and 1838, it was originally commissioned by Napoleon to celebrate his victories, but was completed under Austrian rule as a symbol of peace. The arch stands 25 meters tall and is adorned with intricate reliefs, statues, and bronze chariots. It marks the start of the historic Strada del Sempione, which leads to the Simplon Pass in Switzerland. Today, it is a popular meeting point and a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a picturesque backdrop for photos. The surrounding park and the nearby Sforza Castle make it a perfect starting point for a leisurely stroll through Milan's historic center.

A bit of history

Construction began in 1807 under Napoleon's reign, designed by Luigi Cagnola. After Napoleon's fall, work halted and resumed under Austrian rule, finally inaugurated in 1838. The arch was originally called 'Porta Sempione'.
