Getting there

A bit of history

The Uffizi was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1560 to house the administrative offices of Florence. Over time, the Medici family amassed a vast art collection, which was bequeathed to the city in 1743 on condition that it never leave Florence. The museum opened to the public in 1865.
