Villa Jovis

Villa Jovis is the largest and most impressive of the twelve Roman villas on Capri, built by Emperor Tiberius as his primary residence from 27 to 37 AD. Perched on the easternmost point of the island, the complex covers about 7,000 square meters and includes residential quarters, baths, cisterns, and service areas. The most dramatic feature is the 'Salto di Tiberio' (Tiberius's Leap), a sheer cliff drop of over 300 meters where, according to legend, the emperor threw condemned prisoners into the sea. Today, visitors can explore the ruins and imagine life in this imperial retreat. The site offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Bay of Naples, the Sorrentine Peninsula, and on clear days, Mount Vesuvius. The walk up is steep but rewarding, with wildflowers and lizards dotting the path.
