The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca is a revered pilgrimage site perched atop Colle della Guardia, a hill southwest of Bologna. The church is famous for its iconic image of the Virgin and Child, known as the Madonna di San Luca, which is carried in procession through the city each year. The most distinctive feature is the 3.8-kilometer (2.4-mile) portico of 666 arches that connects the sanctuary to the city center, providing a covered walkway for pilgrims. The portico, built in the 17th–18th centuries, is the longest in the world and offers a gradual ascent with beautiful views. At the top, visitors can admire the Baroque church interior, the Byzantine-style icon, and the sweeping panorama of Bologna and the surrounding hills.
