The Fortezza Medicea (Medici Fortress) dominates Volterra's skyline, perched on the highest point of the city. Built in the 16th century by the Medici family, it was designed to control the rebellious city and protect Florentine interests. Today, the fortress is a striking example of Renaissance military architecture, with massive stone walls, bastions, and a commanding position. While the interior is not open to the public (it houses a prison), you can walk around the exterior and enjoy breathtaking views of Volterra's rooftops, the rolling hills of Tuscany, and the distant sea on clear days. The fortress is especially atmospheric at sunset when the golden light illuminates the stone. A stroll along the ramparts offers a sense of history and a perfect photo opportunity.
