Vernazza is often considered the jewel of the Cinque Terre, with its natural harbor sheltered by a rocky promontory. The village is built around a small bay, where fishing boats bob in the turquoise water and pastel-colored houses climb the steep hillsides. The heart of Vernazza is the Piazza Marconi, a lively square right on the waterfront, lined with cafes and restaurants. Dominating the skyline is the 11th-century Doria Tower (Torre Doria), part of the Castello Doria, which offers panoramic views of the coastline. The village also boasts the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia, a Gothic-Ligurian church overlooking the sea. Vernazza is a great base for hiking the Sentiero Azzurro to Monterosso or Corniglia. Unlike some other villages, Vernazza has a small beach area near the harbor, perfect for a quick dip. Its narrow streets are filled with shops selling local wine, pesto, and limoncino.
