Riomaggiore, the southern gateway to the Cinque Terre, charms visitors with its steep, terraced hillsides lined with pastel houses that cascade down to a small, pebbly beach and a picturesque marina. The village is built around the Rio Maggiore stream, which once powered local mills. A short climb from the waterfront leads to the ruins of a 13th-century castle, Castello di Riomaggiore, offering sweeping views of the Ligurian Sea and the rugged coastline. The main street, Via Colombo, is lined with shops, trattorias, and wine bars where you can sample the region's famous Sciacchetrà dessert wine. Unlike the more touristy Corniglia or Monterosso, Riomaggiore retains a lived-in feel, with laundry fluttering from windows and locals gathering in the piazza. The marina is particularly photogenic at sunset, when fishing boats bob gently and the golden light illuminates the facades.
