Monterosso al Mare is the westernmost and largest of the five Cinque Terre villages, offering a more spacious and resort-like feel compared to its neighbors. Its main draw is the long, sandy beach, rare in this rugged coastline, where visitors can swim, sunbathe, or rent umbrellas and loungers. The historic center is divided into two parts: the old town (Monterosso Vecchio) perched on a hill with narrow lanes and a medieval castle, and the newer seaside area (Fegina) with modern hotels, restaurants, and the beach. A pedestrian tunnel connects the two. Highlights include the 14th-century Church of San Giovanni Battista with its black-and-white marble stripes, and the giant statue of Neptune (Il Gigante) carved into a rock at the beach. The village is also a hub for hiking trails, including the scenic path to Vernazza. Despite its larger size, Monterosso retains a charming, laid-back character, with lemon trees, colorful houses, and a lively promenade.
