St Mark's Basilica is the spiritual heart of Venice and a dazzling example of Byzantine architecture. As you approach the square, its five domes and ornate facade catch the light, hinting at the splendor within. Inside, the walls and ceilings are covered in over 8,000 square meters of gold-ground mosaics depicting biblical scenes, creating an otherworldly glow. The floor is a mosaic of marble and glass, undulating from centuries of foot traffic. Don't miss the Pala d'Oro, a stunning altarpiece of gold, enamel, and precious gems, and the Treasury, which holds relics and treasures brought from Constantinople. The museum upstairs offers close-up views of the mosaics and the original horses of St Mark. The basilica is still an active place of worship, so respectful attire is required.

Don't miss

  • Golden mosaics covering the interior domes and walls
  • Pala d'Oro altarpiece with 1,300 pearls and 300 sapphires
  • The Treasury with Byzantine silver and relics
  • Museum (Loggia dei Cavalli) with original bronze horses
  • Marble mosaic floor with geometric and animal designs
