Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, often simply called 'I Frari', is one of Venice's most impressive Gothic churches. Its vast, brick exterior belies a stunning interior filled with art treasures. The church is the final resting place of several Venetian doges and the painter Titian, whose own masterpiece, the 'Assumption of the Virgin', dominates the high altar. Other highlights include Donatello's wooden statue of St John the Baptist and Giovanni Bellini's 'Madonna and Child with Saints'. The soaring nave, lined with side chapels and monuments, creates a sense of serene grandeur. Visitors often remark on the contrast between the plain facade and the rich artistic heritage within.
