Monte Grona, standing at 1,736 meters, is a favorite destination for hikers seeking breathtaking views over Lake Como and the surrounding Alpine peaks. The trailhead is located near the village of Breglia, about a 30-minute drive from Varenna. The hike is moderately challenging, taking around 3-4 hours one way, with a steady ascent through forests and open meadows. The reward at the summit is a 360-degree panorama that includes the entire central Lake Como, the Bergamo Alps, and on clear days, even the distant Matterhorn. The trail is well-marked and popular, especially in summer and early autumn. Along the way, hikers can spot wildflowers, listen to cowbells from grazing herds, and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Monte Grona is less crowded than some other peaks, offering a more tranquil experience. Proper hiking gear is recommended, as the terrain can be rocky and steep in sections.
