The Arco di Riccardo is a well-preserved Roman triumphal arch dating from the 1st century AD, standing in the narrow streets of Trieste's old town. It was once part of the city walls and served as a gateway. The arch is named after Richard the Lionheart, who, according to legend, passed through it during the Third Crusade. The structure is made of limestone and features a single archway with Corinthian pilasters. Though modest in size compared to Rome's arches, it is a powerful reminder of Trieste's Roman origins as the city of Tergeste. Visitors can walk through the arch and admire the ancient stonework, imagining the centuries of history that have passed beneath it. The surrounding area is filled with medieval buildings and cozy cafes, making it a charming spot to pause and reflect.
